Overview
This guide explains the requirements and best practices for processing Adobe InDesign (.indd) files using LinkFixer Advanced. Proper configuration is essential to ensure accurate link detection and modification.
Application Requirements
Adobe InDesign Installation
To process InDesign (.indd) files, Adobe InDesign must be installed and activated on the same machine running LinkFixer Advanced.
Supported InDesign Versions
Newer versions of InDesign can open, and process files created in earlier versions.
You may use any version of InDesign, provided that:
- The .indd files were created in that version, or
- The files were last saved in an earlier compatible version
Important:
If your workflow requires maintaining a specific InDesign file version, you must use that same version during LinkFixer Advanced processing.
Modifying Links in InDesign Files
When using the Modify Links process:
- The destination (child) files must already exist at the target location
- File names must match exactly
Why this is required:
LinkFixer Advanced relies on OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) servers, which verify that linked files exist before updating links.
If the files do not exist or names do not match:
- Links will not be updated correctly
Best Practice:
- Move or rename files before running the Modify Links process
- Ensure all target paths are valid and accessible
Important Processing Guidelines
Do Not Open or Close InDesign During Processing
While LinkFixer Advanced is processing InDesign files:
- Do not manually open or close Adobe InDesign on the same machine
Reason:
This may interrupt the OLE server, causing:
- Read/write errors
- Incomplete or failed link updates
Handling Links to Child Files
In Adobe InDesign, links may appear as broken if the associated application for that file type is not configured.
To resolve this issue:
Option 1:
Install the required application on the same machine as LinkFixer Advanced
Option 2:
Associate the correct application with the file type:
- Open Windows Explorer
- Go to Tools → Folder Options
- Select the File Types tab
- Assign the appropriate application to the file extension
