Why is LinkFixer Advanced reporting fewer links than I can see in my Excel files?

Question
I can see hundreds of cell formula links in my Excel spreadsheet, but LinkFixer Advanced is only reporting a small number (for example, five). Why is there a difference?
Answer
In most cases, those hundreds of formula links are pointing to the same small set of source files.
By default, LinkFixer Advanced reports only unique links found within an Excel file, rather than counting every individual cell reference.
This behavior aligns with how Microsoft Excel stores links internally. Even if a spreadsheet contains hundreds of formulas referencing external data, Excel typically stores only a limited number of distinct link paths. Each formula may reuse one of these same paths.
What This Means
- Multiple cells may reference the same external file or location
- LinkFixer Advanced counts each unique link path once
- As a result, the reported number of links is often much lower than the number of visible formulas
