What is an "absolute" link?
Modified on: Fri, 13 Mar, 2026 at 4:42 PM
An absolute link is a link that contains the complete file path to the child file referenced by the link. This full path includes the drive letter, the folder structure, the file name, and the file extension.
Example
C:\Company\Division\Department\Section\Filename.doc
This example shows the entire location of the file, starting from the drive and continuing through each folder until the file itself.
Absolute Links in LinkFixer Advanced
LinkFixer Advanced allows you to convert links to their absolute format in bulk using the Modify Links process. The “Force links absolute” option updates each link so that it contains the full, absolute path to the child file.
The Inoculate, Cure, and Move/Rename processes also provide an option to finish links by converting them to their absolute format after the main process has been completed.
If none of these finishing options are selected, LinkFixer Advanced will preserve the original format of the links. This means:
- Relative links remain relative
- Absolute links remain absolute
- UNC links remain UNC
