What
Factors Can Affect the Processing Speed of LinkFixer Advanced?

The
processing speed of LinkFixer Advanced can vary depending on the
computing environment, the location of your files and database, and the type of
data being processed. The following factors are known to have a significant
impact.
1.
Installation Location
For
optimal performance, review the “Where to Install LinkFixer Advanced”
section of the LinkFixer Advanced User’s Guide (around page 20). The relative
locations of:
- The data being processed
- The machine running LinkFixer
Advanced
- The database (SQL Server or
SQLite)
…can
significantly affect processing speed.
Tip:
Using Microsoft SQL Server
instead of the default SQLite database is the single most important factor for
improving performance. SQL Server allows LinkFixer Advanced to:
- Automatically process files using
multiple threads
- Run multiple instances
concurrently for faster file processing
2.
File Location
Processing
files stored on SharePoint or OpenText servers is slower than
processing files on a shared drive on a local server. This is because the file
must be:
- Downloaded from the server
- Processed by LinkFixer Advanced
- Uploaded back to the server
SharePoint
Online (Office 365) is slower than SharePoint on-premises due to additional
latency associated with transferring data over the Internet.
3.
Physical Machine Factors
If
running LinkFixer Advanced on a physical machine, performance can be affected by:
- Number of processors available
- Amount of available memory (RAM)
- Network card speed
- Active anti-virus software
(including Windows Defender) scanning files during processing
- Other applications competing for
CPU or memory resources
4.
Virtual Machine Factors
If
running LinkFixer Advanced on a virtual machine (VM), the following factors may impact
processing speed:
- Type and brand of the VM
- Number of processors allocated to
the VM
- Whether processors are dedicated
or on-demand
- If processors are on-demand,
performance can be affected by other workloads on the host server and the
priority assigned to the VM
- Amount of memory allocated to the
VM
- Anti-virus software running on
the VM or network
5.
Network Factors
Network
performance can have a major impact on processing throughput. Key
considerations include:
Network card type and speed:
Older or slower network cards
can limit transfer rates
Network management software:
Flow-control, load-balancing, or
other optimization tools may restrict data transfer
Network anti-virus software:
Scanning files in transit can
reduce throughput
Base network speed:
Determines the maximum data
transfer rate (e.g., 1 Gbps vs. 10 Gbps)
Network traffic volume:
High usage during certain times
can slow transfers
NAS performance:
The speed of the storage device
and concurrent traffic on it can affect file access times
Optimizing
these factors can significantly improve LinkFixer Advanced performance, especially when
processing large volumes of files or working with remote storage.
Some
characteristics of your data may also influence processing speed:
Average file size:
Larger files take longer to
process
Number of links per file:
Files with more links require
additional time to analyze and repair
Ratio of good to broken links:
A high number of broken links
increases processing time because each link must be validated and repaired
File types:
Some file types require extra
processing. For example, InDesign files are slower to process
because LinkFixer Advanced must use the InDesign application to access and modify them
By
understanding these factors, you can better anticipate processing times and
optimize your workflow when using LinkFixer Advanced.
