Why This Happens

  1. A FIPS cryptographic service may be enabled by your Network Administrator through Group Policy settings.
  2. If enabled, you cannot disable it by changing settings on your workstation or server.
  3. This policy is described in Microsoft's article: System cryptography: Use FIPS compliant algorithms for encryption hashing and signing.

Important Notes

  1. FIPS must be tuned off by your Network Administrator, since it applies across the network.
  2. In rare cases, it may be a Local Policy and can be disabled in the system registry.
  3. Always check with your Tech Support team before making manual changes.
  4. Turning off FIPS may require a system reboot. Plan ahead to avoid disrupting backups or maintenance schedules.

Steps to Turn Off FIPS Cryptography (Local Policy)

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type secpol.msc into the dialog and click OK.

  3. In the Local Security Policy Management Console window that opens, use the left tab to navigate to the Local Policies>Security Options.

  4. Scroll down the right pane and double-click System Cryptograph: Use FIPS compliant algorithms for encryption, hashing, and signing.

  5. In the Properties window, select the Disabled option and click the Apply button.

  6. Close the Properties window by clicking OK.

  7. Close the Local Security Policy Management Console.
