Overview

The Modify Links function repairs broken links in files that were moved or renamed without inoculation or the Move/Rename process.

When to Use This

Use this process if:
  1. Links are already broken
  2. Files were not inoculated before moving
  3. You know the new location of the files
  1. Open LinkFixer Advanced folder from your desktop.

  2. Navigate to the Sample Files folder, open the Word Sample Files subfolder, and then open the DOC 97–2003 folder.

  3. Move (cut and paste) the Data Files folder up two levels (to Sample Files).

  4. Rename it to Moved Data Files.
  5. Open the LFA_Intro.doc in the DOC 97-2003. Confirm if the links are broken.

  1.  Close the LFA_Intro.doc and Open LinkFixer Advanced.
  2. In LinkFixer Advanced, click Scan Only.
  3. In the select folder, tick the DOC 97-2003 from the folder tree.

  4. Click Next Step: Select Files and choose Process all files in selected folders.
  5. Click Next Step: Select Links and choose Process all links in selected files.
  6. Click Next Step: Preview and Preview of Links to Scan will appear.
  7. In The Preview of Links to Scan, you can clearly identify which links are broken and which are working.

  8. Click Next Step: Process Files
  9. Click Run Scan Only.

A reminder message about SQL Database performance may appear. By default, LinkFixer Advanced uses its built‑in SQLite database. Since this is only a sample file, you can simply click "Yes" to continue.

  10. After the process is complete, open the Scan report and verify links show as Missing.

  11. Close the Report
  1. Open LinkFixer Advanced and select Modify Links.

  2. In Select Folders, check the DOC 97-2003 folder.

  3. Click Next Step: Select Files, choose Process files matching specific file extensions and wildcards, then uncheck All the file types below and select Word.

  4. Click Next Step: Select Links, choose Process links matching specific file extensions and wildcards, then uncheck All the file types below and select Word.
  5. Click Next Step: Create Rules.

Step 4: Create Rename Rules

  1. Click Add Rule.
  2. In the Define Rule dialog:
    1. Component: Full Filespec
    2. From: Data Files
    3. To: ..\..\Moved Data Files
Note: ("..\" means "go up one level"; repeated twice since folder moved up two levels)

  3. Click "OK" to save the rule and Next Step: Preview.

Step 5: Preview and Process

  1. The Preview of Links to Modify screen appears, where you can view the link paths before and after the changes.
  2. Click Next Step: Process Files
  3. Click Run Modify Links.
    1. A reminder message about SQL Database performance may appear. By default, LinkFixer Advanced uses its built‑in SQLite database. Since this is only a sample file, you can simply click "Yes" to continue.
    2. If prompted about backups, select whether to create automatic backups (Recommended for production files). Select "Do not make automatic backups" since this is only for a sample file and click "OK".
  4. When the process is completed, view the Modify Links Dashboard and open the Summary Report to confirm if the links were fixed.
  1. Open LFA_Intro.doc again and test if the links are working.
  2. Confirm they now work correctly.
