Can a file lose its inoculation?

Generally, once a file has been inoculated, it stays inoculated. The LinkID or FileID is stored in a hidden location within the file and is not normally affected by everyday actions such as editing, copying, or moving.

When inoculation can be lost

  1. Removing a link from a parent file
If a link is deleted, its inoculation is lost. Any new link added in its place will not inherit the old function.
  1. Deleting or overwriting a child file
If the child file is deleted or replaced with another file of the same name, its inoculation is removed.
  1. Restoring from an old backup
If you restore files from a backup created before inoculation, those files and links will no longer be inoculated.

What happens next?

  1. Files or links that lose inoculation become "unprotected".
  2. To ensure they can be migrated and cured in the future, they must be re-inoculated.
  3. Without inoculation, links cannot be automatically repaired by the Cure process.
